Where can you find a decent Opera Mantle when you need one?
I replied to a vacuous journalist who dissed John Galliano's Opera Cloaks collection in the late 1990's, to inform her that all fashion is a rewrite of an older often better idea played out 40, 50, 60 or even 100 years earlier. The fact that Galliano had used the work of Paul Poiret as inspiration was indeed no different to Poiret's use of early 19th century fashion in England. Galliano though had taken this fashion for training opera mantles to dizzying heights and done so very well. Now 13 years later I find myself reminded of this Galliano scandal, a more restrained one it has to be said than his latest anti-semitic scandal, and to thinking of seeking those delicious opera mantle images, only to find it most difficult to locate images of them online. Oh well, it was an eon ago in fashion terms so I had better focus on the bad weather, the political and financial outrages and oh yes global warming.
